Thoughts from Gwen Brandau '19

The work at the CEC, the Cloud Forest School (Centro de EducaciĆ³n Creativa) is very hard. We are hammering, digging holes, mixing cement and much more, so that you are really exhausted when you get home to your host families. But there are so many motivations that make you actually happy to work. First of all, to see the development of our project and how our work can change something is really awesome. Then, the atmosphere in the group motivates you so much, as we really get along very well. What also helps a lot, is that our leaders, Trini and Cohen, know exactly what they are doing, and so do the workers from school.

Another way we are motivated is by the activities after work. I am always looking forward to those, and it makes you happy when you are done with your work and you can get to the fun part. But the most important motivation of all is that we help the children at this school. It feels so good when they come to us, just to say thank you.

So after all, the volunteering has been a big and exciting part of this trip, which turned out to be more fun than I expected.
